Welcome my blog, this week I am going to discuss a topic that can be very stressful for both adults and adolescents; acne.
Acne traditionally begins in puberty, but it also affects adults too. Approximately 80% of teenagers suffer with some form of acne, there seem to numerous myths about what the causes are. Let’s look at some of the known facts;
Acne, medically known as Acne Vulgaris, is a disease of the skin which involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles. Acne comprises of spots and painful bumps on the surface of the skin. It is mostly seen on the face, but can also appear on the shoulders, back and buttocks. Scarring can be experienced caused by severe acne.
What are the causes of acne?
There is no solid evidence as to what causes acne, however, it commonly appears during puberty, when the sebaceous (oil) glands start to release oil – the glands are stimulated by male hormones, androgen, released by the adrenal glands in both males and females.
Androgen can over-stimulate the oil-producing sebaceous glands, in turn this causes blocked pores, stopping the oil from reaching the skins surface. Acne is a skin bacterium that attacks this trapped oil, generating waste products; which inflame the sebaceous glands, the result is blackheads, whiteheads or pimples.
Some research indicates that a receptiveness to acne may also be genetic. Some medications that contain androgen and lithium have also been shown to cause acne.
Greasy, comedogenic cosmetics can also cause acne in some predisposed people or aggravate the condition. Most high street products, even those with a hefty price tag will contain chemicals that block the pores and stop the skin from breathing.
Traditional ways to treat acne.
Treating acne can feel like a mine field, clever advertising and marketing will have you believe that expensive products designed to treat acne will work.
I have seen numerous clients over the years that have indeed spent hundreds of pounds in a quest to clear their acne with little or no resolve.
Before using an acne treatment from the high street I would highly recommend that you look out for any of the following ingredients:
Benzoyl peroxide: This is a particularly common ingredient in many acne medications, it works under the skin, in doing so it destroys oil and bacteria, although this dries the skin itself. There is also a deliberation that it may also increase your risk of cancer. Using an ingredient that dries out the skin, has an opposite effect to what is required, thus, the skin produces more oil to counteract this drying out.
In addition to this if there is existing scarring and damage to the skin, this ingredient can worsen it.
Sulfur: Another popular ingredient used in acne products. Sulfur essentially dries out your skin, (in addition to the benzoyl your skin really does not need anymore drying), When used on active acne or an open wound on the skin, sulfur may trigger acne scars and worsen the problem. On top of that sulfur has a high PH level that boosts the growth of bacteria on your skin.
Zinc oxide: This ingredient is commonly used in sunscreens. it blocks the skin from absorbing vitamin D and is thought to cause the lack of this vitamin in children and adults. It has also been shown to cause whitening of the skin.
Whilst there are a heap of other ingredients in acne product these are the main culprits.
