Indian Head massage in Brighton or (Champissage) has been practised for over 1000 years. The word ‘shampoo’ comes from the Hindi word ‘champi,’ meaning massage of the head. In India the treatment comes from a tradition of family grooming and is still practised today. Infants are massaged and then taught to share the massage with family members and is also a preparation ritual before wedding ceremonies. Indian Head Massage was brought to England in the 1970s by Narendra Mehta, who was training to become a physical therapist. He missed the therapeutic effect of regular head massage and decided to return to his native India to research the ancient art of head massage. He began to formulise his findings and, as a blind person, he had a greater sensitivity to the body’s responses to specific moves. Narendra extended the treatment to the upper part of the body and introduced the Ayuverdic element into the massage to include the three higher chakras.
